What is cost per lead? Formula, benchmarks and examples

What is cost per lead? Cost per lead, or CPL, is the amount you spend on advertising to generate one lead. It is the first number most funnels are judged on, but on its own it can mislead: the real goal is the lowest cost per booked call, customer or sale.
Quick answer

What is cost per lead?

Cost per lead is total ad spend divided by the number of leads generated in the same period. If you spend $2,292 and get 537 leads, your CPL is $4.27. It measures how efficiently ads and pages turn traffic into contacts, and it should always be read alongside lead quality.

The cost per lead formula

CPL = ad spend / leads

Related metrics take the same form: cost per booked call = ad spend / booked calls, and cost per acquisition = ad spend / customers. Track all three; a funnel with a higher CPL can still win on cost per customer.

CampaignSpendLeadsCPL
Roofing$2,292537$4.27
MVA personal injury$27,467.706,275$4.38
Mortgage$2,573492$5.23
Agency$12,707.551,890$6.72
Roofing at volume$24,9021,024$24

CPL varies by industry, offer, geography and lead definition. A phone-verified lead costs more than an unverified one and is usually worth it.

How cost per lead works in practice

CPL depends on three things: the cost of reaching people (CPM), how many click (CTR), and how many of those convert on the page (opt-in rate). The page and offer usually move CPL more than ad tweaks, which is why a quiz or lead magnet often halves it. Accurate CPL also depends on tracking: the Meta Pixel and Conversions API decide which leads Meta counts and learns from.

Example: a mortgage campaign with 208 leads at $25.48 produced $65K+ in revenue, far more value than many cheaper lead campaigns.

Common mistakes

  • Chasing the lowest CPL. Cheap leads that never answer cost more per sale.
  • Different lead definitions. Compare like with like: verified vs unverified, form vs call.
  • Ignoring follow-up. A slow response wastes leads you already paid for.
  • Judging on two days of data. Let campaigns exit learning before cutting them.

Frequently asked questions.

What is a good cost per lead?

It depends on the industry and what a customer is worth. In our cases, home services and legal leads have ranged from about $4 to $27, and mortgage from about $4 to $26. A good CPL is one where cost per customer stays well below customer value, not a fixed number.

How do I calculate cost per lead?

Divide total ad spend by the number of leads in the same period and from the same campaigns. If you spent $9,770 and generated 1,865 leads, your CPL is $5.24. Use the leads recorded in your CRM rather than the ad platform alone, since platforms can over or under count.

Why is my cost per lead rising?

Common causes are ad fatigue, a narrower audience, seasonal competition, a broken form or tracking, and slow pages. Check tracking first, since a missing Lead event looks like rising CPL. Then refresh creative, review the offer and test a shorter or more interactive form.

Is a lower cost per lead always better?

No. A lower CPL can come from looser targeting, unverified forms or incentives that attract people who never buy. Judge campaigns on cost per booked call and cost per customer. A $25 lead that books and closes often beats a $5 lead that never answers the phone.

How can I reduce cost per lead?

Improve the offer and page first: a clearer promise, a quiz or estimator instead of a long form, and fast-loading mobile pages. Then refresh creative, send deeper conversion events through the Conversions API, and test broader audiences. Our guide on reducing cost per lead covers each step.
